The Amalfi Coast, where the mountains meet the sea, has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. It's easily recognised for its unique villages, which are built into the slope of the mountainside, guaranteeing a fantastic sea view for each pastel-coloured home and villa. The star attraction is the coastline itself and the best way to enjoy it is to hire a car or scooter and tackle the winding road for yourself. Don't forget to bring your camera along and always pull over to a safe shoulder on the road before getting out to take brilliant landscape photos of the Bay of Naples and Sorrento Peninsula. However, if you're not keen to take on the hairpin bends in the road yourself, you can always jump aboard a local bus and admire the views from the window.

One activity not to be missed is a trip to the Emerald Grotto, a mysterious cave filled with water, best reached by rowboat. The waters glow eerily with sunlight from deep below the surface, thanks to a hidden tunnel in the cave's wall, and they'll leave you feeling baffled yet amazed.

If you're a history buff, you'll appreciate a visit to the Roman Villa in Minori, which is estimated to have been built in the first century AD. Then if you're going through Atrani, stop off at the 1,000 year old church of San Salvatore de'Birecto. In the town of Amalfi itself, you can visit the Cloister of Paradise, which was once a gravesite for noble families but is now a bit of an open air museum with i beautiful murals, sculptures and Arabic architecture. Not far away is the fascinating Paper Museum, where you'll learn the ancient art of creating handmade paper and you'll also be able to take home some paper souvenirs.

While you're here, forget about counting calories and just enjoy the abundance of delicious hand-made pasta, seafood and fine wine. Wine connoisseurs; be sure to stop in at Tramonti, which is set on rolling green hills and home to magnificent vineyards and dairy farms.
