Bega’s lush, rolling hills have made it an ideal location for raising cows and other livestock since the 1840s. Dairy farming overtook as the primary industry in the 1860s, which eventually led to the establishment of Bega Cheese’s butter factory in 1900. In 1920, the first co-op store was purchased. Today, you can learn more about the town’s cheesemaking history and explore a faithful reproduction of the original co-op store at the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre. Tickle your tastebuds and try a range of delicious Bega products as well as other Australian cheeses. Want something a little more filling? Pop by the café and pick from homemade meals and cakes, or indulge with a milkshake or delicious ice cream.

There’s much more to Bega than just cheese. Depending on who you ask, the town’s name means either "big camping ground" or "beautiful" in Aboriginal – either way, it’s not hard to see why! Bega’s proximity to New South Wales’ Sapphire Coast makes it the ideal place to get a feel for the incredible natural attractions the region has to offer. Bega’s green hills are dotted with forests and woodlands with rivers and creeks winding through, making for some postcard-perfect photo opportunities.

Just 19 kilometres from Bega is Brogo Dam, which takes up the southern section of the Wadbilliga National Park. High, craggy cliffs and bushland surround the area and you’ll feel like you’re really in the middle of the wilderness. Bring a picnic and enjoy lunch under the canopy of the park’s tall trees, or even bring a canoe along and go for a leisurely row. Brogo Dam is also a great spot if you want to catch a glimpse of Australian wildlife, including the endangered spotted-tailed quoll and the adorable sooty owls. Bega is also a short drive from Tathra and the nearby Mimosa Rocks and Bournda National Parks, both stunning parks in their own right.
