We’ll get right to the point: Laos has all the attractions of its neighbours Vietnam and Thailand, without all the crowds. It’s got outstanding food, unexplored forests and an entire town that’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site (Luang Prabang). But you probably know all this, you savvy traveller. All you need to decide is where your flights to Laos should take you.
The country is long and mountainous, so if you’re planning on seeing more than one city, consider taking domestic Laos flights. If you have the time, there is a good bus system as well. When you get settled in your city of choice, learn to pronounce these two words: songthaew and tuk-tuk (that last one is easy). These modified motor vehicles may look strange, but they’re reliable and cheap.
Looking for adventure? Fly into southern Laos bright and early and make friends with monkeys as you hike to the waterfalls of Don Hau Sao Conservation Area.
If you’d rather sleep in, book an afternoon flight and arrive well-rested to your accommodation in Laos’ popular city of Luang Prabang. Put on your sunnies to check out the golden Wat Xieng Thong temple.
Night owls have just one place to be. Skip the vitamin D and take an evening flight to the capital, Vientiane.
There is one thing you can do to live like a local no matter where you travel: eat! In Laos, it’s all about the sticky rice. Eat it plain with soy sauce or top it with a hundred-year-old-egg, if you dare. Can’t shake the craving for pad Thai? Bangkok is just an hour’s flight south of Vientiane. Book Bangkok holiday packages and get going!
Laos is already renowned as an affordable destination, and you’ll have even more cash when you find cheap flights to Laos on Wotif. Splurge on an extra night’s stay instead—because you’ll definitely never want to leave.
