Accommodation In West Wyalong

This friendly town in country NSW is rich in heritage buildings and old-fashioned shopfronts, and makes for a lovely relaxing break from the big smoke. Browse our great range of West Wyalong hotels and enjoy the change in scenery.

History

West Wyalong is the main town in the Bland Shire of NSW. In 1893, Joseph Neeld discovered gold in the nearby town of Wyalong. The town was laid out to accommodate the growing number of miners in 1894, but a large number had already settled west in an area called ‘The Main Camp.’ This was the beginning of West Wyalong, which is now the cereal-growing hub of NSW.

Things to do

Take a walk down Main Street, also known as "the Crooked Mile". Originally a dirt track winding between gold diggings and tree stumps, this road has some sharp turns and angles. The West Wyalong Heritage Walk is a self-guided tour of historic buildings from the 1890s, and it takes about 45 minutes.

If you love bird-watching, you can take your pick from over 180 different species at Lake Cowal, 21km long and 9.5km wide. Test out the therapeutic powers of Barmedman Mineral Pool, where the mineral-rich water is said to heal your aches and pains.

Shopping and dining

Main Street is where it’s at for food and shopping. Check out a boutique store, a country pub, a Chinese restaurant or a funky cafe.

Getting here

West Wyalong is three and a half hours from Canberra and six hours from Sydney by car, and although the best way to get there is a road trip, you can also catch a bus if you’re not in a great hurry! Check out our West Wyalong accommodation and take your holiday at your own pace.
