Founded in 1920 Qantas is the oldest and largest Australian airline, servicing more flight destinations in Australia than any other airline. Qantas also provide regional flights through their subsidiary company QantasLink and freight services through Qantas Freight. Qantas have a reputation for being one of the safest airlines in the world and provide benefits and free flights through their Qantas Frequent Flyer program.
Launched in 2000, Virgin Blue has quickly established itself as a competitive low fare airline and gained around a one third share in the domestic flights market. Virgin offer flights to all Australian state capital cities and many regional centres around the country. Virgin Blue maintains an excellent On Time Departure record and offer a loyalty program called "Velocity Rewards."
Jetstar's Australian flight operations are owned by Qantas but run independently. Since launching their first flights in 2004, Jetstar have grown their fleet and flight routes to include all Australian capitals and a number of regional centres. Jetstar is focussed on providing low cost airfares and often provide sale fares on selected routes.
Rex Regional Express provide regional flight services to New South Wales and South Australia, with connections into Melbourne. Rex was established following the collapse of Ansett Airlines in 2001 and incorporates the former Hazelton and Kendleton Airlines. Their mission is to serve rural and regional Australia with a comprehensive, affordable and reliable air service.
Tiger Airways was established as Singapore's only low-cost airline in 2003 and launched its inaugural flight from Darwin to Singapore - the first Australian destination serviced by the budget carrier - on December 19, 2005. Perth was added to the list of Australian destinations in early 2007, with Perth-Singapore tickets starting from S$22. Tiger Airways is one of Asia-Pacific's fastest growing low-cost airlines and now flies from Singapore to 16 cities in seven countries. Singapore Airlines has a 49% stake in the budget carrier.
Tiger Airways Australia was incorporated in March 2007 in the Northern Territory and domestic Australian flights are due to launch in late 2007. Tiger Airways Australia aims to compete with Jetstar and Virgin Blue in offering very low cost domestic Australian airfares.
