Europe with Trafalgar Tours

by Lisa Barrett

Our trip to London included a stopover in stunning Hong Kong en-route where we grabbed the chance to head up to Victoria Peak fora view of the beatiful lights of the city, before taking the tram down again and scouring the vibrant night markets on the way back to the Hotel.

After a long flight to London it was great to be met at the airport and transferred to our hotel. So good not to have to think and just head straight to bed!!

An early start the next morning and a sightseeing tour with a Trafalgar local guide to see Westminster Abbey, Big Ben and Buckingham Palace, after which we had free time so we stayed to see the charging of the guard (which only happens every second day) followed by a trip on London's newest and most popular attraction, the London Eye.

Our extensive Trafalgar tour covered a great variety of sights and attractions, something for everyone and showed us a great cross section of Europe. We visited historic Windsor, a beautiful town where the castle has been occupied by the Royal Family for over 900 years, en-route we passed Runnymede, where King John signed the Magna Carta in 1215. The following day, after a drive through the 'Garden of England' we crossed the channel into France, taking inthe White Cliffs of Dover as we sailed.

In Paris we were taken on an excursion to Bohemian Montmarte (where the famous Moulin Rouge is located) You need to be on your guard in this area of Paris as there are lots of pick pockets. After dinner we had a night tour of Paris and saw the Arch of Triumph and the Eiffel tower which were still sparkling from the lights they used on New Years Eve 2000!

Paris is beautiful and packed with stunning landmarks which our tour covered - from the Arch of Triumph with the tomb of the unknown soldier, the Champs Elysees, the Opera House, City Hall and Notre Dame Cathedral (as coaches can no longer stop outside Notre Dame we had to come back to that in our free time to have a look) this is one of the most amazing Cathedrals I have seen.During the evening we went to see a Cabaret show at Moulin Rouge!! Next we headed south through the forest of Fontainebleau and past the medieval castle of Chateauneuf to the heart of Burgundy, then East into the valley of the river Doubs, skirting the Vosges Mountains in the Alsace before reaching the Swiss border at Basel. Lots of sightseeing here before enjoying a cruise across the lake and dinner at a Swiss Folklore show in a converted 16th century monastery including cheese fondue which was just beautiful. Next stop Germany and through the picturesque Black Forest, passing Lake Titisee. Our final stop was in Hiedelberg to see the red sandstone castle overlooking the river Neckar.

The tour gave us a good orientation of each place and the Tour Director was full of information and interesting stories. Nothing was too rushed and we had plenty of time to admire each place. The diversity of this tour was just great. Trafalgar is and excellent way to travel Europe especially for first time travelers, you don’t have to worry about tolls, petrol or driving on the wrong side of the road, you just relax and enjoy the country side. They have additional tours and dinners you can purchase while you are overseas which are great (Moulin rouge was one of these extras) and the knowledge of our tour director was exceptional! I would have no hesitation in recommending Trafalgar!

Cathay Pacific were also very good the meals were excellent however there wasn't much variety. I was very impressed with the Flight attendants continual attention to the toilets throughout the flight unlike many other airlines I have traveled with.
