Just Back From Fiji...

by Clint Jones

Bula Vinaka,

These are the only words you need to know and to be honest, I passed not one Fijian whom warmly greeted us as we hurried by. At first you are in this strange hurry and then by the end of the holiday 'Bula Vinaka' and a much more relaxed meander fits in so much better. The frantic new comers are easily spotted.

Six nights on Castaway Island Resort was magic. South Sea Cruises launched my expectations into reality as we pulled up alongside this idyllic paradise. I bet Tom Hanks wished he had crashed nearer to this... For one, he would have been greeted with beautiful welcoming songs & a welcome drink... We actually visited the island where Castaway was filmed which wasn't that far away from us, how did he miss it?

The 3 meals a day were surprisingly good, the buffet breakfast also had the egg man flipping his stuff , lunchtime had a great choice 'off the menu' and dinner was like you had stepped into a fancy restaurant, with no children after 7pm, so time for romance. 5 Fijian Dollars an hour for a Nanny! Good night children. The Sundowners Bar served pizzas, for something different. And all meals were overlooking the water. Slap me, I can't believe I'm here.

This is a 'kids allowed' island. Did you know that the islands are divided up into 'no kids' and 'kids allowed'? Funny hey? Does this mean they grow up on one island and then have to move to another?

Diving was breathtaking with plenty of different locations and all so close. It would have to be the easiest place to dive. Walk from the beach onto the 400hp speedboat with all your gear waiting. Then 15-20 minutes later you are in the water and down 20-25 metres in crystal clear conditions. One trip we passed via the reef surfing area, Tavarua and Magic Island and the world famous 'cloud break' . Snapped a few photos for my nephew in California to make him jealous. A snorkeling adventure around the island or a quick dinghy ride for a snorkel on the inner reef was equally thrilling.

First time enlightenment: The islands are quite close together and they all have something different to offer. To choose which one to go to is hard. I met a New Zealand couple who had been to almost all, a different one each time they travelled and thought Castaway and Matamanoa were a good choice. Another man brought his family to Mana Island every year , a larger island with plenty to do. I guess if you only came once you wouldn't be disappointed with what you chose. Paradise is where you are now and you wouldn't know any different.

Hey, I just enjoyed a holiday with kids, sounds a bit too Disney doesn't it?...
