Just Back From Hunter Valley ...

by Roula Tsoukalis

You don’t have to be a wine lover to visit the Hunter Valley. There is definitely something for everyone and it is only a 90 minute drive from Sydney.

We decided to go on a weekend away there and stayed at the 5 Star Cypress Lakes Resort. There were four of us, so we booked a 2 bedroom villa. They are very spacious beautifully appointed, 2 storeys, with kitchen, dining & lounge on ground level, and the bedrooms (both with ensuite) are upstairs. We had a balcony with a breathtaking view of the Hunter & parts of the golf course, and that balcony was the first place we visited, sipping on that bottle of Semillon from the mini bar and relaxing after the drive, getting in holiday mode...

Cypress Lakes resort is huge! We actually had to drive to our villa, admittedly it was only about a 4 min drive, with all Villas covering a large area, but it gives you an idea of how enormous this place is. The resort also offers a shuttle service to/from the villas to the main resort area, so at the drop of a hat you can just dial ‘9’ on the phone and a shuttle bus will be on it’s way to pick you up.

The magnificent Golf Course & Country Club offer outstanding facilities. There are 2 pools, tennis courts, gym, bike hire and of course the famous Golden Door Resort Spa where you can relax and rejuvenate with an extensive range of treatments.

The next day, we enjoyed a hot buffet breakfast and headed off to begin our day! After a couple of hours of horse riding & 2-3 hours of wine tasting (yes we did get tipsy), we even played a full game of tennis! Needles to say my legs were in a bit of pain after the horse riding and tennis, but I loved it anyway! There is a range of things to do in the Hunter, from Hot Air ballooning to horse riding, to wine tasting tours, to Harley Davidson rides & 4WD Hunter Valley tours. We visited the Cheese Factory, one of the many chocolate factories, and I have to say I really enjoyed the wine tasting! We wanted to buy almost every bottle of wine we tried, but we had to control ourselves.

Of course you can opt to do nothing at all, and just relax and enjoy the beautiful surroundings that is Cypress Lakes Resort...

We also enjoyed fine dining at the award winning ‘Pipette’ resort restaurant. Alternatively you can also have in-villa dining with 24 hours room service available.

This was a memorable weekend away and we all agreed that you need a bit more than just 2 days in the Hunter (one of them I would ideally like to spend at the Golden Door Spa), to really relax and try something different…
