Just Back From Perisher

by Loren Cranney

Jindabyne is about 5 hours drive from Sydney, 6 hours from Melbourne and 2 hours from Canberra.

The Perfect place for a short holiday close to home.

We arrived in Jindabyne and made our way to The Station resort. The Station resort is situated about on 88 hectares which includes a sports oval. It has 250 rooms and can accommodate around 1400 people at one time. There is either a choice of 2, 4 or 6 bed accommodation which has the basic necessities, en suite, heating, tea/coffee making facilities & colour tv which is serviced daily.

The Station resort is a village in itself. There is one licensed premises which regularly has live bands playing, two dining areas, pizza shop, BBQ courtyard, conference facilities and more.

From Jindabyne we drove to the Ski Tube which is a train that takes you to the bottom of front Valley at Perisher. It took about 15 minutes to drive there and approximately 10 minutes ride on the Ski Tube to reach our destination.

As it was the last week of NSW school holidays Perisher was packed with Skiers and snowboarders. The Lines for the Village 8 chairlift and The Quad were packed. At times the lines were taking 40 minutes to reach the front. Clearly the T-bars were a better option if you had the skill to stay on.

The snow conditions weren’t the best and only about 6 lifts were opened. One of the days it snowed constantly and was really cold and the other 4 the sun was out and it was quite hot.

There are quite a few bars and restaurants at the snow, great variety. At 12-1.30 all the pubs and eating areas were packed and it was hard to get a seat!

Tuesday and Thursday Night Skiing on Front Valley is open from 6:30pm to 9:30pm under lights! Tuesday night was better out of the two as there weren’t as many people out. The lines for the lifts went really fast so there was a lot of boarding and skiing going on.

If only I could stay a little longer...better start planning my next trip to the snow!
