Just Back from...

First Class with Emirates

By Adam Johnson

Being far too young for the glamorous days of the flying boats or even the boom of the Jet Set it is not often I can travel and feel I am enjoying a unique or special experience.

That is not to say that international travel is a chore. Anyone who says that must be tired of the world and its myriad of places, people and pursuits, but it ain’t what it used to be. But that depends.

Emirates are a relatively young airline that is making great inroads to Australia. They have clearly decided that they want their customers to feel special and look forward to the trip and embrace what the well travelled Robert Louis Stevenson meant when he said “to travel hopefully is a better thing than to arrive”.

I was recently lucky enough to be one of the few to experience what must be one of the nicest places to be on land, sea or in the air. Suite 1A, not a mere seat, but a place I could call my own on what is still a long trip to Europe whatever your time zone or constitution.

Everything about Emirates at the “pointy end” demonstrates that it has been thought through by people with a passion for travel and an absolutely relentless focus upon the customer’s needs.

The Suite itself is a wonderful environment to be enthroned. The size and layout of the seat itself is not a world beater but up their with the best, but it is the creature comforts of the environment, from the individual minibar and snack basket, through to the best in class in flight entertainment system that makes being in your “booth” a wonderful place to look forward to being.

The service is attentive without being claustrophobic – we all like to be left alone sometimes - and the indulgence of snuggling down in your Emirates jim jams, noise reduction earphones on (looking like some sort of beige teletubby) and closing the doors on your bedroom is bliss.

I almost always look forward to a trip based on where I will be (natural), usually what I am getting away from (honest) but rarely because of where I will be between here and there. With Emirates it genuinely is something to look forward to. And I have flown up the front, in the middle and at the back and each one is close to best in class with the in-flight entertainment in all classes keeping the kids happy and the adults relaxed.

Try Emirates, you’ll like it.
