Koh Samui
By Angelina Martins
I had the pleasure of flying with Thai Airways, business class from Sydney to
Bangkok and economy on the return. Thai airways are extremely friendly and helpful,
and with gourmet Thai cuisine served on board, Thai Airways is second to none.
Currently Thai Airways are drawing passengers names on the flight and awarding
them with a free return flight from Sydney to Bangkok in the same class you are
already travelling in, just unbeatable value.
The island feeling of Koh Samui begins when you arrive at the airport. The island
is covered in coconut trees, framed with white sand and topaz blue water. The
heat is around 30 degrees yet still comfortable. Koh Samui still has a raw island
feel to it, with little traffic, dirt roads, and a layed back approach to life.
On day one, we set off to view some hotels followed by a tour of the island. The
main attractions are beautiful scenery, gorgeous waterfalls and grandma and grandpa
rock. I stayed at Chaba Cabana Samui Resort (3.5star) set on the northern end
of chaweng beach, a 10 minute stroll along the beach to the shops. A comfortable
family friendly resort.
The night life in Koh Samui is excellent with loads of different bars, clubs and
of course shopping. Also look out for the full moon party events for a total party
experience. The general safe feeling about the island makes partying even easier,
and transport is readily available at all times. Thailand has imposed a 2am curfew
where everything stops and closes and this also applies to
Koh Samui, not a bad idea as you don't want to miss out on the sun and day activities.
During the day I went on a day tour of the surrounding islands, where the boat
drops everyone off at picturesque beaches hidden and protected from the sea. An
absolutely amazing day, with extra activities like trekking, snorkeling sea kayaking
or just lazing in the sun and getting a massage.Koh Samui is definitely a recommended
holiday destination.
A few hotel that I would recommend to make your holiday complete are, The Imperial
Boat House Hotel Samui (4 star) - beachside location, offering unusual accommodation
of authentic rice barges converted into accommodation, beautifully landscaped,
a great get away resort. Central Samui Beach Resort (4 star), located right on
prime beachfront, this resort is second to none with its tropical gardens and
extremely tasteful style and elegance. Le Royal Meridien Baan Taling Ngam (5 star),
absolute luxury. Recommended to experience at least once in your life. Experience
the hillside overlooking the sea and Ang Thong Marine National Park.
And of course no trip to Thailand would be complete without
stopping in Bangkok for at least two nights to shop till you drop.
