Maldives

By Leonie Fraser

Ever had that dream where you're lying on a deserted island on your deck chair, sipping on your cocktail, and surrounded by white sand, blue blue sea, and palm trees? You may not know it, but you're in the Maldives. I was lucky enough to visit this magical destination last year...here are my tips for some great resorts:

**Rihiveli
This is an exclusive island. With only 47 bures, you can really take advantage of the secluded feel of this small and exclusive resort. You can do your own thing and laze the time away, or get active with a choice of activities ranging from island hopping and water sports, to aerobics and basketball for the energetic. Dine in the restaurant set right over the lagoon, with views to neighboring deserted islands.

**Sun Island
One of the larger islands in the Maldives. Great for active people, with so much to do and see. We raced around this huge island on bicycles (a great way to get from one bar to the next during cocktail hour!....though I must admit to being a bit unsteady on my wheels towards the end). So many choices on this island for things to do. I spent most time on my deck chair in the sun, deliberating whether to swim in the ocean to my left, or to take a dip in the pool to my right (complete with pool bar). The overwater bungalows at Sun Island are great for honeymooners.

**Makunudu
Great for romance and relaxation...Makunudu is perfect for a honeymoon, or just a quiet break for couples. The accommodation here is in traditional Maldivian style....which really adds to the desert island feel. The free introductory dive and island hopping excursion (among other things) make this island great value.

Most packages include some or all meals. My advice is to include as much as possible in your package before you depart Australia, as once you arrive, you'll be hit with USD prices, which aren't too kind on the Australian pocket at the moment. This way, you can forget about money and just enjoy your holiday once you arrive. Drinks prices are similar to those at Australian hotels and resort. For a special arrival...try a transfer to your island resort by seaplane. This is a surprisingly affordable option, and certainly a spectacular way to start your holiday with birds eye views of the area below.
