Trucking Around Africa

by Mark Watkins

Well I have been back for a week from my great trip to 7 countries in Africa.

What a buzz. The best thing I have ever done.

An awesome experience.

We were on a large truck with 15 other people from around the world. People from France, Holland, Sweden, USA, England and Germany. Our safari travelled 6600 km in 24 days. Camped in two man tents every night in camp sites. Scott and I took it upon ourselves to light a fire every day and cook the food on the coals. We were the life of the trip and kept everyone entertained. Beer was $1 a stubbie so plenty of drunk and late nights in front of the fire.

Vic Falls was spectacular. Went white water rafting down the Zambezi River. Got off half way and went boogie boarding in the rapids which was a highlight. 2 lions came 30 metres from the camp one morning. Elephants came through at night. I had a piss one night and a Hippo was 5 meters away eating grass.

One afternoon 100 Baboons came through our camp site making their way to the river. We saw all the animals close up. Elephants, Hippos, Lions, Baboons, Impala, Leopards, Hyena, Giraffe, Rhino, Buffalo and bird life. Camped on the beaches of Mozambique. Hiked up a mountain to above the clouds. The lowlight was to see the way the people live. In huts made of tree trunks and mud bricks and grass. No water, no electricity. The kids have nothing. They begged for a pencil to take to school. It depressed me. I gave all my clothes away to the kids.

I recommend it to anyone.

So this is what the boys from the Sydney Razorbacks Basketball Team get up to in their time off the court!!
