Last week saw the close of my days in the sun drinking Pina Colada’s as I arrived back from Fiji.
What a marvelous place to kick back by the pool or the beach, ponder life and do absolutely nothing but relax with a good book.
And if it’s relaxation you’re after, Fiji is the destination for you. It’s one of those places that beckons you to stay right where you are at your resort without the impending guilt of not getting out and seeing the country – mainly, I gather because there’s not a huge amount to see. Although I hear a trip to the islands is breathtaking, being over there with a bunch of friends for a wedding meant we were all content catching up in the sun without the need to explore. We stayed at the Shangri La Hotel – a great resort which caters for pretty much anyone. I couldn’t help but notice there were dozens of families taking their annual holiday while we were there. The sound of children was a common occurrence in some areas of the resort. The ‘quiet’ pool, or child free pool as we called it, was a blessing I will admit! 3 restaurants, a pool bar and a night club also meant there was an abundance of ‘younger’ people, particularly big groups of nocturnal dwelling 20 and 30 somethings looking for a party. On my second last day, when most of the wedding party had absconded, we decided to hire a car and head to Suva for some action. We saw some funny scenes, including functioning telegraph poles in the ocean, wild boars sunbaking on beaches and tombstones in front yards of houses. If the car trip there wasn’t so interesting, I’d not recommend the effort but the photo album certainly is an interesting one thanks to that car ride. The weather was sensational most of the time. Not too hot this time of year so it was quite easy spending the entire day by the water relaxing. The day spa proved to provide the best massage and pedicure I’ve ever had and the free water sport activities filled in any other spare time we could muster. Overall, a fantastic tropical destination made for indulgence in every way...
