Just Back From Hervey Bay

by Julian Rembrandt

Hervey Bay is better known as the Whale Watching capital of Australia and being the gateway to the largest sand island in the world - Fraser Island. Even though Hervey Bay has a number of major draw cards it has been able to keep its small town charm. Development sharks have not yet taken control of the sleepy hollow however the race has began with direct flights shuttling an assortment of foreigners and Aussies daily.

Whale watching season begins in August and goes through to the end of October. There are a few operators to choose from and customers are never disappointed with their eco experience. Hervey Bay is sheltered by Fraser Island which creates a warm haven for Humpback whales to rest. These majestic creatures have made Hervey Bay a regular stop on their annual migration south after giving birth in the warm waters of north Queensland.

It is surprising how close tourists can come to the Whales as they wave to you with their dorsal fins. Breaching the water with their amazing weight is also a sight to see!

Fraser Island is a must see when visiting Hervey Bay. Fraser Island is the largest sand island in the world, heritage listed because of its unique array of animals and fauna and flora. Tour companies operate daily tours or extended tours for the more adventurous. Dingoes are a unique element to the island and sleeping at night can be an experience if you have not secured all of your food items. For tourists who want more control over the choice of destinations and the pace in which you explore, hiring a 4WD is the best bet.

Hervey Bay has a beautiful esplanade that overlooks quiet waters of the Bay. If you are thinking of a quick dip in the tempting waters, go early before the tide withdraws. Swimming can become difficult in only a foot of warm water.

Many tourists visit Hervey Bay every year to see the Humpback whales and Fraser Island has many areas to explore that cannot be achieved in one trip. Discount flights daily means a mundane weekend washing the clothes and mowing the lawn can instead be a weekend exploring the natural wonders of the Fraser Coast.
