Italy travel guide and holiday information

Romantic; artistic; ancient and the Italian Stallion are just some the words that spring to mind when thinking about Italy. Italy is the birthplace of western civilization; fashion and delicious pasta dishes. Oh, and who could forget the infamous Mafia. It’s an exotic combination that makes Italy one of the world’s top holiday destinations. Italy has everything from its lazy, hazy Tuscan countryside to the catwalks of Milan (Milano). This is one country you must not miss.

Italy Hotels and Accommodation

Accommodation in Italy can be super-expensive to cheap. If you are on a budget holiday than youth hostels are the way to go. The hostels throughout Italy are well-maintained and include breakfast, and start from around $35 per night in peak season. Along the Amalfi coast there are not a lot of youth hostels. There are mainly hotels whose prices tend to skyrocket during peak season and vacancies are minimal. It is best to pre-book accommodation if you are holidaying in Italy during in peak season, or if you are on a short break there are many great Italian holiday packages. If not, once you are over there, you’ll discover many cheap deals; but it may take time finding accommodation.

Italy’s Best Attractions

Italy has the best attractions in the world. Take a trip back in time to Italy’s capital, the Eternal City of Rome (Roma). Within walking distance of each other are the Roman Forum; The Trevi Fountain or take public transport to Piazza Di Spagna; The Spanish Steps and St Peter’s Basilica.

Use the local bus service as much as possible; it is easy; the day or weekly tickets aren’t too expensive, they get you everywhere (you can ever be naughty and jump on a bus with out paying.) But keep an eye out for pick-pockets. It’s best to keep your backpacks, bags and camera bags on the front of your body. Hire a car, or catch a train to the Amalfi Coast, south of Rome.

The glorious Italian coastline boasts the most glamorous people; beaches and islands. You must take time out and see the sleeping city of Pompeii in Naples (Napoli). If you travel north of Rome, you must stop in Florence (Firenze); a pretty town that is famous for its leather; art (home to Michelangelo) and Medici chapels. And if you’re seeking some chills down the spine, it even has a serial killer museum. Oh, and take a bike ride across the wine country of Tuscany. And Venice (Venezia) has to be the most beautiful, and romantic city you will ever see, while for shopping; Milan is a must. You can score discount designer wear, or stunning one-off pieces for your wardrobe. In the fashion stakes back home, you’ll be a year ahead of everyone else.

Getting to the Italy of America

There are quite a few major airlines that have flights into the various cities of the US from Australia. You do not require a visa if you planning on staying for less than 90 days but there are certain things that you need to consider. You will need to check with the Consulate for more details.

Best Time to Visit Italy

There is nothing like a summer holiday in Italy. The warmer months are from around late June to September. August is one of the best months for sun-drenched beach weather. But take note, most of Italy shuts down for its own holiday break during August. Prices can go up in tourist areas such as the Almalfi Coast. This is a popular holiday destination for local and international tourists; so book early and be prepared to spend more money. The tourist industry does not close down during this time though, the upside being that in major cities like Rome, there are less people and traffic; while shops and restaurants are still open. You can also sometimes find vacancies and cheap deals in accommodation, and the nightlife is still pumping.
