Japan has quite an extensive rail and bus network, allowing travel between most major cities and suburban areas. If you’re on a tight budget it may be best to take the slower but cheaper option of the busses. Rental cars are generally fairly rare due to Japan’s excellent public transport system that encompasses virtually the whole country. The tolls on Japanese expressways are also fairly high with the price usually double to cost of a train ride.
Japan has a fairly mild climate tending toward cool. The winter months – December to February – sees temperatures in the single digits in most regions while the summer months (June to August) sees temperatures in the mid 20’s with temperatures rarely reaching 30 degrees Celsius.
Many countries have visa arrangements with Japan that do not require travellers to attain a visa (unless travelling to Japan for work or to live). If you’re travelling to Japan from Australia, you only need a visa if you intend to stay for a period exceeding 90-days.
