As well as being the capital city of Europe’s Belgium, Brussels is also often said to be the capital of the European Union, with a great many of the leading EU institutions housed in the city. It features a wonderful mix of cultures and is home to a large number of attractions and activities to suit a wide range of different interests. It is also easy to get to other fantastic parts of the country with ease from Brussels, and onwards travel across other European countries is also really easy. The city centre is easy to explore by foot, with many fantastic sights along the way. There is a mixed dining and night scene, and plenty of Brussels accommodation to rest your weary head at the end of each great day.
Things to do
The main square, known as the Grand Place – Grote Market, is surrounded by stunning historical buildings. During the day, sunlight bounces off the golden structures and at night the buildings are equally enchanting as they stand proudly lit around the square. Two of the city’s most unusual sights are the Manneken Pis and the Jeanneke Pis, statues of a young boy and girl that are definitely not your typical statues! The futuristic-looking Atomium is a symbol of the city and you can enjoy sweeping city views from the upper platforms. Brussels is also home to the fifth biggest church on the planet, the large and impressive Sacre Coeur Basilica. There are plenty of museums, galleries, shops, and parks dotted around Brussels.
Those interested in political attractions will enjoy seeing the buildings associated with this powerful institution. You can enjoy a guided tour of the European Parliament as well as watching presentations at both the European Council and the European Commission. Make sure you also swing by the Statue of Europe. Brussels’ Law Courts, the Royal Palace, and Mini Europe are also interesting attractions in the city, and beer lovers can visit a number of breweries and even have a go at brewing their own beer! Antwerp Zoo is one of the oldest zoos in the world, and a great place to take the kids. Try some delicious Belgian Waffles whilst in Brussels and marvel at the volume of fab things that the relatively small city manages to cram in.
