History

Havelock North was founded in 1860 by the government in order to provide farmers and settlers with land. It was named after British general Sir Henry Havelock. The farmers who ended up buying land there turned out to be mostly on the more well-off side, and to this day Havelock North remains a coveted place to live.

The summit of Te Mata Peak (‘The Sleeping Giant’) offers awe-inspiring views, and it’s also very easy to get to.
