With its tree-lined streets and grand houses, Havelock North is a wonderful place to live... but a holiday here is the next best thing! Names like The Sleeping Giant and Cape Kidnappers might sound like the titles of adventure novels, but they’re among Havelock North’s superb natural attractions. As the gateway to the Hawke’s Bay region, Havelock North is wine country, walking country and creativity country. So swoop like a hawk on our Havelock North hotels.
Havelock North was founded in 1860 by the government in order to provide farmers and settlers with land. It was named after British general Sir Henry Havelock. The farmers who ended up buying land there turned out to be mostly on the more well-off side, and to this day Havelock North remains a coveted place to live.
The summit of Te Mata Peak (‘The Sleeping Giant’) offers awe-inspiring views, and it’s also very easy to get to. You can take your pick from several walking tracks, cycle up a bike-only track or drive to the top. Peer out over wine country and you’ll take in views of fantastic mountain ranges including the Cape Kidnappers. Named by Captain Cook after local Maori attempted to abduct one of his crew members, this sandstone headland looks like a living work of art, with a seaside golf course spread out over the cliffs and rocks. If you want a game of golf with an amazing ocean view, the Cape Kidnappers are for you!
As well as the various other walking tracks around town, Havelock North has art galleries, concerts and cultural events, and golden beaches just 20 minutes away.
Laidback, casual and out in the open, The Village is the heart of Havelock North’s shopping scene. It has everything from bookstores to gift shops to fashion galore. There’s even a honey shop where you can meet the bees and see how the honey is made. The wineries in and around the town offer wine and lunches in locations like the Te Mata Hills, and The Village has a good bunch of cafes and restaurants serving country food at its finest.
Havelock North is just a 20 minute drive from Napier, and our cheap flights to Napier will take you there for less. Pick your Havelock North accommodation with us now and lock in a great holiday.
