Heraklion Holiday Packages

Noted as the cradle of Minoan civilisation, Heraklion is stuffed full of temples, ancient ruins, fountains and fortifications that will delight even the most reluctant history student.

Beyond the city walls, the beaches give off a Caribbean vibe—gently curving sands backed by some of the largest natural palm groves in Europe—some of which have stood here for more than 3,000 years. History, mythology, rugged landscapes and a thriving bar scene all await on the Greek island of Crete when you book one of our Heraklion holidays.

Things to Do in Heraklion

Holidays to Heraklion will usually include a visit to The Palace of Knossos—five kilometres outside of the city centre. The most eye-pleasing example of an excavated Minoan town, legend says this is where the Minotaur—half-man and half-bull—munched on maidens from his labyrinthine prison before being slain by Theseus. Ouch. Visit the site in tandem with the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, which displays exquisite artifacts—jewellery, pottery, statuettes and sarcophagi—representing every period in Cretan history.

For hiking enthusiasts, there are some top-draw walking opportunities at the so-called "Gorge of the Dead." Located at Káto Zákros on the eastern tip of the island, the gorge is actually full of living things including vegetation, birds and open water. There's a nice beach at the end of the trail where you can wash the dust off or enjoy a cold beer in one of the little tavernas.

If you're going on your Heraklion holiday with the kids, Watercity Waterpark near Heraklion should keep them entertained for hours. Check the park's operating hours before you depart, as they are sporadic in the winter. Want to see it all? Add one of Wotif’s Heraklion car hire options to your Heraklion packages for the no-fuss way to see this beautiful island.

Shopping, Dining & Nightlife

If euros are burning a hole in your pocket, head to Daedalou Street for an eclectic mix of designer gear, Cretan olive oil, local wine, raki and assorted curios. The popular Saturday market by the port is also worth a slot in your schedule. This kilometre-long snake of a market sells fruit, vegetables, herbs and other goodies.

After shopping, head back to the town centre and pick a spot in one of the many courtyard tavernas that pepper this area. Crete has the longest growing season in the whole of Greece, so expect supremely fresh local fare wherever you dine. Be sure to sample local treats such as Thekeftedákia (meatballs), grilled baby calamari and bougatsa, a flaky pastry desert, on your holiday to Heraklion.

If the night is still young and the after-dark scene is beckoning, drink some rakí in one of the many bars in Heraklion town. Several local taverns and clubs feature traditional Cretan dancing, which is like line dancing. Nightclubs in Heraklion are focused in the area near the harbour.
