The National Museum is your first stop, housed in what was originally Ubon's City Hall. Get a taste for the history and a complete overview of the local art, religion, geography and architecture. The different rooms are split into different time periods, to truly immerse yourself in what life here was once like.

Wat Thung Si Muang is a unique temple, especially photogenic in the very early morning or as the sun sets at dusk. Containing a blend of Lao and Rattanakosin architecture, what makes this structure unique is the scripture hall that sits in the centre of a small pond on angled stilts. A fantastic historical way to "termite-proof" the library and ensure that the palm leaf scrolls are protected. The crafting of this wood building remains in very good condition to this day.

The park in the centre of town is host to a number of monuments, and a great way to spend a relaxing afternoon with your family. Check out the memorial to the founder of Ubon, as well as a monument of merit recognizing the importance of the local people. The city pillar was constructed in 1972, and the latest addition is a 22m candle sculpture erected in 2000 to honour the king's 72nd birthday. Stay after dark and enjoy the lively buzz as the locals gather to spend their evenings together.

If you're keen to get out of town, Wat Nong Pa Pong is a lovely forest temple that is not to be missed. Only 12 kilometres south of the city, it was once an abandoned temple and was re-instated as a monastery in 1954. The extensive temple grounds and surrounding forest are so peaceful you can lose yourself for hours as you soak up the tranquility. It's possible to spend the night here with the monks and nuns, but please follow their lead and respect the sanctuary of this temple.

For a truly unique experience, time your visit with the beginning of the Buddhist Lent festival around the end of July. The city plays host to a spectacular candle festival, where beeswax is carved into intricate religious figures. Some of the best are displayed for days, and on the eve of the event the candles line the streets - excellent for some one-of-a-kind photos. Besides the parade on the day, hundreds of activities take place for you to enjoy the festive atmosphere. Shopping, carnival rides and games, come and see for yourself a true Thai festival.
