Home to 70% of Fiji’s population, Viti Levu’s name appropriately means ‘Great Fiji’. It has a rugged landscape sculpted by a history of volcanic action, and a mountain range that separates the island’s east from its west. Captain William Bligh of the HMS Bounty charted the island in 1789 after being kicked off his own ship in the famous ‘Mutiny on the Bounty’ incident (you might have seen the movie?).

Things to do

Where better to start your trip than Nadi, the gateway to Fiji and home of the international airport? Visit the colourful Sri Siva Subramaniya Temple, and hang with the birds at Kula Ecopark. Nearby Denerau Island has an 18-hole golf course and white sand beaches.

Also on Viti Levu, you’ll find Fiji’s capital Suva. Sitting on the end of a hilly peninsula, Suva has nightclubs, historic buildings, museums and parks. Colo-I-Suva Forest Park has 6.5km of walking tracks, pools and waterfalls.

In Lautoka, you can take an eco tour of Abaca Village at the base of Mount Koroyanitu. Trek the Koroyanitu National Heritage Park and you’ll head past waterholes and tiny villages, through grassland and forest, up to the tops of rolling green hills.

Shopping and dining

Viti Levu has modern shopping malls, especially around Suva. For something a little more "Fiji", check out Suva Flea Market to pick up handicrafts and other Suva-nirs! Dine in delicious local Fijian fare, sample some Japanese or Indian, have dinner at a floating restaurant on a docked cruise ship, or get your caffeine hit at a local cafe.
