If you thought Western Australia was “out there” and “wild”, just wait until you get down to Tasmania. This giant island off the coast of Victoria is about as rugged as it gets.
But even though part of the landscape might look like something out of The Revenant, there are plenty of beautiful beaches around. One is White Beach, which is about as peaceful as a Japanese tea garden. Actually…the other beaches in the area are non-existent unless you want to travel a couple hundred kilometres, so here’s a list of things to do in White Beach instead:
- Hardy’s Hill Nature Reserve – Lace up a pair of hiking boots and go for a bushwalk through this stunning nature park. Keep your eyes peeled for the island’s most famous resident, the Tasmanian devil. They’re friendlier than the one on Looney Tunes, but not by much. Keep your distance.
- Port Arthur Historic Site – Make your way across the peninsula until you come to the former convict settlement of Port Arthur. Check out the old penitentiary ruins at the Port Arthur Historic Site and then take a ferry ride to the Isle of the Dead.

- Port Arthur Motor Inn – Hey, this isn’t in White Beach, but that’s okay. Book yourself a one, two or three-bedroom suite and then enjoy a plate of fish and chips at the on-site restaurant. After that, head into town and go for a walk in the Government Gardens.
