Yea became a gold mining town after some of the precious stuff was found there in 1859. When the gold ran out, it became a farming and timber centre. In 1911, about 1126 people were living in the town, with about 1500 locals now. Several historical buildings from the gold rush days still stand in the town centre, including Beaufort Manor, which dates back to 1876.

On High Street you’ll find nature and greenery on the street’s central strip. Old-fashioned buildings line each side, with shops, restaurants, cafes and pubs inside them. Enjoy a coffee or a meal prepared with local produce or take a drive down the Goulburn Valley Highway for a vineyard with biodynamic wines and hillside views. Gallery34 on High Street is in Yea’s old Commercial Bank Building, where the bank vault is now an area for the kids to play. Monthly exhibitions showcase new artists all the time, and you can also buy stationery, jewellery and other handmade goods from local designers.

Nature lover? Make sure you visit the Yea Wetlands, 32 hectares of boardwalks, gravel paths, lakes, picnic areas and grassland. It’s a lovely place to relax, take a wander and try to spot some native animals like koalas and platypus. Check out the Yea Flora Fossil Site on Limestone Road, which contains fossils of leafy plants from over 400 million years ago, the oldest of their kind in the world! The Great Victorian Rail Trail is Victoria’s longest rail trail – a trail that follows an abandoned railway line - at 134km long. You can start your journey in Yea where the Cheviot Tunnel and Yea Railway Station are relics from a long-forgotten era of train travel.
